Hotel d’Angleterre

The more than 250-year-old Hotel d’Angleterre is Denmark’s best-known hotel. Kings and celebrities, rock bands and film stars have stayed here over the centuries.

After the largest hotel renovation in Danish history, d’Angleterre has regained its former splendor and can once again take its place as one of the world’s finest hotels.

The background for the renovation was a dilapidated hotel, where many alterations and adaptations to the requirements of the time had compromised the appearance of the building both inside and out: the facade was dilapidated and with uneven white windows, walls had been torn down, floors had been inserted and ceilings had been lowered to make room for technology with low-ceilinged rooms as a result.

The hotel has now undergone a complete renovation, which preserves the historic building, but which at the same time gives d’Angleterre a contemporary classical style. The goal was not just to create a modern and functional flow in the hotel, but also to give a new spaciousness to the public areas and to the rooms and suites.

In order to recreate the Hotel d’Angleterre as a “grand palace”, the facade has been painted in a sophisticated grey-white color and the old white windows have been replaced with new, dark green windows that create a nice contrast to the white facade. On the ground floor, the hotel opens up to the city with magnificent specially designed windows and doors, and the restaurant and a new champagne bar invite Copenhageners inside.

The new d’Angleterre has fewer but larger rooms, 90 in total with the Royal Suite of 250 m² as the largest. No two rooms are alike, but all stay within the same elegant, light color scheme. The historic banquet halls and salons have been restored and can now accommodate parties of up to 580 people. The new style of the hotel is contemporary classic. There are elegant materials in light and pleasant tones, exclusive surfaces and subdued decorative effects, which clearly emphasise the connection between the new and the old, and beautifully accentuate a plethora of outstanding rooms within its walls. Balancing elegance with a feeling of being at home, the renovation substantiates the white lady’s proud traditions.
